Saint Valentine’s Day is dedicated to the memory of Saint Valentinus. There are three saints by that name. Legend has it that one of them secretly married a pair of lovers in accordance with Christian law in the time of Emperor Claudius II Gothicus, and was sentenced to a cruel death for doing so.
Before his death he wrote a letter to the jailor’s daughter, whom he had befriended, signing it “yours, Valentine.” Over the years Saint Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. Over the years the status of this day, which is dedicated to the holiday of love, has grown in strength.
Saint Valentine’s Day is celebrated by sending messages of love, such as poems, flowers, chocolates, romantic trips and love letters.
Saint Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to express emotions and even to ask for forgiveness from the lovers whom we have hurt in the past or present, to unburden our hearts, to apologize and even to make a personal romantic confession.
